Patrick Mahomes will take the field briefly on Sunday in New Orleans.
Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid confirmed Friday that Mahomes will start for the Chiefs in their preseason opener against the Saints.
Although a lot of teams rest their starting players, especially their quarterbacks, for most of the pre-season, Reid usually plays the starting linebacker at least a little bit. Mahomes played a total of 36 snaps over two preseason games last season, then sat out the third.
Even though he won’t see much action on Sunday and will be limited to just one quarter, Mahomes is looking forward to simply getting back there.
“I always say that first batter, you want to get hit where it’s not too hard, but you can feel it,” Mahomes said on Friday. via ESPN. “You go through a long season of working through the pocket and knowing the players are rushing in, but they can’t touch you, so it’s a whole different thing when you come into the game and you’re able to step in and everything like that.
“I like to have at least one or two leads under my belt to say I’m ready to go (and) do the right things. Coach Reed, let me do it.”
Mahomes threw for a league-high 5,250 yards and 41 touchdowns last season, his sixth with the Chiefs, while leading the franchise to a Super Bowl victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.
